Amadeus Philippines warns travel agencies on slowdown in corporate travel

Amadeus Philippines on Thursday said travel agencies should brace for the possibility of a slowdown in corporate travel next year once the country begins to feel the impact of the global financial crisis.

Amadeus Philippines general manager Albert Villadolid said local companies will in all likelihood trim travel expenses in 2009 as they realign their budget allocations to cope with the economic challenges.

“Travel agencies must adapt to the changing economic times. The global financial crisis will force corporations to tighten their travel expenditures. It is an industry danger sign that has to be addressed quickly,” Villadolid said.

He added: “It is now the time for travel agencies to come up with more innovative marketing campaigns, better travel packages, and install reliable and flexible technology tools to survive and prosper,” Villadolid said. Continue Reading

The Philippines ready to welcome Asia-bound tourists amid tension in Thailand

The Philippines is ready to accommodate tourists who have changed their mind in going to Thailand amid the political tension in Bangkok, the Department of Tourism said on Wednesday.

“There could be a lesser choices for tourists. We are here for them,” DoT Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque Jr said in a phone interview.

He was quick to clarify, however, that this does not mean the Philippines is taking advantage of Thailand’s political misfortune.

“We are praying for them. I’m sure they will be able to bounce back sooner than later,” Jarque added.

Flights of Philippine carriers to Bangkok have been cancelled as protestors broke in to the Suvharnabhumi Airport at the Thai capital in efforts to block the return of Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

Reports said protestors are up in arms against the Parliament who is proposing changes to the Thai constitution. Continue Reading

Cebu Pacific now flies to Osaka Japan

Cebu Pacific (CEB), the airline brand of the Gokongwei family’s JG Summit Holdings Inc., launched yesterday its Manila-Osaka service at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport [NAIA] Terminal 3.

“We are confident that the launch of our Japan operation will increase the accessibility between Japan and the Philippines. Osaka is our first destination in Japan and we believe that our trademark low fares can stimulate tourism to both countries. The inclusion of Osaka in our international route network makes us the only low cost carrier in the ASEAN region to serve the major North Asia markets of Japan, China and South Korea,” CEB president and CEO Lance Gokongwei said.

The new route will involve a thrice weekly service using the 179-seater Airbus A320 aircraft. The plane departs from Manila every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 1:40 p.m. and arrives at the Kansai International Airport at 6:35 p.m. The return flight takes off from Osaka at 7:20 p.m. and arrives in Manila at 10:15 p.m.

“There are many Filipino communities in Japan and our new service will definitely allow them to come home more frequently; or perhaps, their families can visit them instead. This is aside from opening avenues for business, trade and investment opportunities,” Gokongwei added. – Rudy Santos
