Barcelona – great for a week or a weekend

Barcelona is one of the most visited cities in Europe, and it’s easy to see why. For many people, Barcelona is only an hour’s flight away and with many of the budget airlines offering cheap flights there, it’s the kind of place that you can visit for a weekend, even though it has enough to keep a holidaymaker entertained for much longer than that.

When you are planning Barcelona Spain holidays, think about what you want to see before you go, as depending on the time you have available you may have to choose only a certain number of sights or attractions.

An absolute must when visiting Barcelona is to walk along Las Ramblas. This pedestrianized area is a great place to get to feel the vibrancy of this city, and you can enjoy watching street entertainers as you wander down Las Ramblas, as well as sampling some great food in one of the many tapas bars here.

For lovers of architecture, make sure you get to see Anton Gaudi’s cathedral, the Sagrada Familia. You can also visit Gaudi’s former home in Park Güell, where you can also see many examples of Gaudi’s tile work and sculptures.

The Olympic Ring – built for the 1992 Olympics – is a great place to visit. While you’re there, you can visit the stadium, the St Jordi sports pavilion and the Calatrava Communications Tower.

If you don’t have time to visit many other places in Spain, the Spanish Village in Barcelona is a great way to get a feel for the rest of the country. Here there are replicas of streets and buildings from all over Spain; the village was created for the 1929 Exhibition.

Whether you stay in Barcelona itself or on the outskirts, you’ll find that it’s a really easy city to find your way around, but there is no chance of running out of things to do and see while you’re there.
