Drumming up cheer this year-end festive season will be the myriad performances, shopping deals and celebratory events that are lined up for Singapore’s Christmas in the Tropics 2008, to be held from 15 November 2008 to 2 January 2009.

Among the annual highlights of Christmas in the Tropics is the highly anticipated Christmas Light-up, which will mark its 25th anniversary this year. President S.R. Nathan will be the guest-of-honour for the switch-on ceremony on the 15 November 2008 at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.

Themed ‘A Sweet Christmas in Singapore’, the decorations will centre around the Sweet Family who live in Christmas Town and run a Sweet Shoppe. The family is celebrating Christmas in Singapore and spreading sweet cheer along Orchard Road and the Marina Bay, which will be transformed into a fantasy candy wonderland. More Grandstand Seats for Singapore Grand Prix

Changes to the designation of corner numbers will mean that the Marina Bay circuit is officially reduced from 24 to 23 corners for the 2008 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix on 28th September. The change in designation reflects amendments to Turn 10, at the end of St Andrew’s Road which passes City Hall and The Padang.

“Previously what was Turn 10 and 11 was actually 3 corners close together in a chicane configuration, created to provide the right geometry and corner speeds, due to the lack of straight ahead run off in this part of the circuit” said Singapore GP Director–Technical & Race Operations, Michael McDonough. “As it is created solely around what is in effect the approach to one corner it was determined, in association with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, that one turn number (Turn 10) be used with a, b and c identifying the change in geometry through the turn.”

In addition, there have been further changes to offer additional grandstand seating to accommodate overwhelming demand. In just five months, over 92% of the tickets to the 2008 Formula 1™ SingTel Singapore Grand Prix have been sold. Continue Reading

Singapore to Close Merlion for Cleaning

Singapore’s Merlion at Merlion Park will be closed for routine cleaning from 27 June to 6 July 2008.

The works have been scheduled to be completed in time for the National Day Celebrations. During the cleaning, the Merlion will be hoarded up for safety considerations.

The Merlion was first built as an eight-metre tall sculpture in 1972 and located at the mouth of the Singapore River to “welcome all visitors to Singapore”. Commissioned for approximately $165,000 in 1971 by the Singapore Tourism Board (then known as the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board), it was built by Mr Lim Nang Seng, a local craftsman who had won several prizes in the Singapore Handicraft and Design competition.

The Merlion was formally installed on 15 September 1972 by the then Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. On 15 September 2002, the Merlion was moved to its current location at Merlion Park next to One Fullerton, and now overlooks the scenic Marina Bay.

Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines to Terminate Shuttle Service

Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines are terminating the Shuttle Agreement on their services between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, with effect from 1 June 2008. The two national carriers started the Shuttle in 1982, in response to demand for shuttle-like flights between the two cities.

The termination of the Shuttle Agreement will not reduce frequencies or change the fact that a wide variety of fares are now available on the route. The Shuttle Agreement provided for the carriers to agree on a common fare to charge customers who turned up at the airport on standby for the next flight.

The progressive deregulation of the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur route and the ever-increasing use of the Internet for a variety of transactions such as booking of tickets and check-in (even at the last minute), has changed the travel landscape, removing the need for a shuttle service. Continue Reading
