Six of Spain’s restaurant made it into The UK’s Restaurant magazine world’s top 50, four out of those are in the top 10. The list starts out with Chef Ferran Adria of El Bulli in Catalonia for it’s fourth year in a row as the World’s Best Restaurant. The voting by 800 chefs, critics and industry insiders gave Spain a huge pat on the back after years of being unnoticed.
Mugaritz – run by Andoni Luis Aduriz, one of Adria’s proteges was again in fourth place
Arzak in the Basque region won eighth place for the second year running.
El Celler de Can Roca in Catalonia was the major surprise with a 21 place move up to number five in the poll. Another Adria protege
The last, a welcome surprise, was founded in 1986 by three brothers, Joan Roca the head chef, Josep Roca the sommelier and Jordi the dessert chef. Joan was speechless to find that he had climbed from number 26 to number 5 in a year, the most spectacular ascent in the history of the listing.
“This is the happiest day of my professional life. It is a dream come true to have made first place four times in a row, something usually happens once in a lifetime. And I am extremely pleased for Spanish cuisine, what fantastic consolidation, four Spanish chefs amongst the top ten.” Said Ferran Adrià.
El Cellar voted as the second best restaurant in Spain was only given a Michelin 2 star rating this year which just goes to show that the Michelin guide is not the definitive pulse in fine dining.
