The Philippines ready to welcome Asia-bound tourists amid tension in Thailand

The Philippines is ready to accommodate tourists who have changed their mind in going to Thailand amid the political tension in Bangkok, the Department of Tourism said on Wednesday.

“There could be a lesser choices for tourists. We are here for them,” DoT Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque Jr said in a phone interview.

He was quick to clarify, however, that this does not mean the Philippines is taking advantage of Thailand’s political misfortune.

“We are praying for them. I’m sure they will be able to bounce back sooner than later,” Jarque added.

Flights of Philippine carriers to Bangkok have been cancelled as protestors broke in to the Suvharnabhumi Airport at the Thai capital in efforts to block the return of Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

Reports said protestors are up in arms against the Parliament who is proposing changes to the Thai constitution.

The Philippine embassy in Thailand has already issued a travel advisory warning Filipino travelers from going to Bangkok “until further notice.”
