In aiming to achieve environmental and social sustainability, The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali is pursuing Green Globe certification.
The Westin Resort Bali has commenced the first stage of the Green Globe Program, known as Benchmarking. This involves measuring annual consumption of water, energy, paper and cleaning products as well as the amount of solid waste the Resort produces. A Sustainability Policy which outlines the resort’s environmental and social sustainability objectives was also endorsed by the General Manager on the 21st April 2008. Together with Green Globe and assistance from environmental consultant, Georgina von Einem, goals and plans are being made to improve the resort’s environmental performance with the aim of achieving Green Globe certification by December 2009.
On Wednesday the Westin Resort Bali launched the program to its staff, which the hotel calls Associates. “It’s crucial to have our Associates understand and support this program. Without their support we will never be able to achieve our goals. We want them to have a deep understanding of how essential this program is and hopefully they will not only implement it at work but will also apply this knowledge at home,” said Jan Bundgaard, General Manager of The Westin Resort Bali.
As part of the launch Associates were each given an eco-friendly shopping bag which is reusable and made from cotton. The bag was designed in-house and features the persuasive words ‘reduce, reuse, recycle, recover and renew.’ According to information gathered from idepfoundation.org, one eco-friendly shopping bag can replace 1000 plastic bags. Many plastic bags end up in the rivers and oceans, dumped on the edge of the road or in a landfill and are choking the environment. Additionally, resources like fuel and electricity are consumed in the production of plastic bags which contributes to global warming. By using the eco-friendly shopping bag, hotel Associates will be doing something positive to help the environment. “This is to celebrate the hotel’s commitment to Green Globe 21 and to be an active part of the solution. We all need to act with more responsibility for our one and only earth ensuring a livable environment for future generations,” added Mr. Jan Bundgaard.
Being the only Westin branded property in Indonesia since December 2003, The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali enjoys a prime beachfront location in the Nusa Dua enclave on Bali’s southern tip and offers 350 rooms and a convention centre adjacent to the resort.
