Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, Resom sign P20-B tourism project

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has recently signed a contract with Korean-owned Resom Resort Phils. (Resom) for the development of a P20-billion world-class tourism resort complex in this Freeport.

SBMA chairman and administrator Roberto V. Garcia and Resom chairman Sang So Shin signed the lease development agreements that would pave the way for the construction of this landmark tourism project.

The first phase of the project involves the development of a prime waterfront property previously known as the mini-golf course with a gross area of two hectares and a buildable area of 6,000-square meter (sqm.).

Resom is committed to construct in this area a luxury hotel with around 300 rooms, convention facilities, pool, spa, restaurants and other support facilities. Continue Reading

Philippine tourism breaches 4M visitor arrival mark

Davao Samal IslandThe Philippines welcomed a total of 4,272,811 foreign visitors in 2012, posting a 9.07% increase from 3,917,454 visitors in 2011. This marks the first time in the country’s tourism history to surpass the 4 million visitor arrival mark.

 South Korea set a new all-time high by supplying a total of 1,031,155 visitors or 24.13% of the total visitor volume to the Philippines.  Registering 11.45% growth from 2012, South Korea remains the biggest market and the first to contribute one million visitors.

The United States of America came in second with 625,626 visitors, equivalent to a 15.27% share. Japan ranked third with 412,474 visitors or 9.65% of the total inbound traffic.

Other markets consistently providing significant volume and positive growth are China with 250,883 arrivals (5.87%), Taiwan with 216,511 (5.07%), Australia with 191,150 (4.47%), Singapore with 148,215 (3.47%), Canada with 123,699 (2.90%), Hongkong with 118,666 (2.78%), Malaysia with 114,513 (2.68%), United Kingdom with 113,282 (2.65%), and Germany with 67,023 (1.57%). Beijing Starts 72-Hour Visa-Free Stay Policy

Beijing recently announced a 72-hour visa-free stay for citizens from 45 countries who have outbound air tickets and visas to a third country, starting January 1, 2013. Weh Island waters in Indonesia is home to 133 coral species

A recent study has concluded that the waters off Weh Island, Sabang city, Aceh province, are home to 133 coral reef species, according to Nur Fadli, a researcher at Fishery and Marine Research Centre of Syiah Kuala University.

“Of the 133 species found, three were recently listed and five are potentially new species,” he said here on Tuesday.

Nur Fadli noted that the study on coral reefs was jointly conducted by the Fishery and Marine Research Centre of Syiah Kuala University, ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University of Australia, Wildlife Conservation Society, and Flora and Fauna International.

“The results of this study show the uniqueness of coral reefs in Weh island and its vicinity. This is reflected in the species composition, which is a mix of Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean coral reef species, as well as the ones which are commonly found in Indonesian waters,” he added.
