Many of the hotels also offer bicycle rentals, perfect for peddling along the 26-mile strand that abuts the Pacific Ocean, from Torrance to Santa Monica.

One of Redondo Beach’s most fascinating historical footnotes, was the arrival of the Father of Mainland Surfing, George Freeth, dubbed as the “Man Who Can Walk on

Water,” when he brought ocean surfing from Hawaii to the mainland U.S. in the early part of the 20th Century. Hundreds of spectators would stand on the beach, as he mounted his 200-pound, eight-foot long solid wood surfboard and catch a wave, standing upright, as he rode it onto the beach.
