In January, the Mandarin Spa at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong is to launch a special Sleep Ritual treatment for guests needing a little help relaxing properly. Priced at HK$1,400 for a 90-minute treatment, the ritual is designed to induce sleep through the use of music, scents and massage, thereby relaxing the mind and body simultaneously.
“It’s a fact of modern life that most people don’t get enough sleep,” said Spa Director Lynsey Hughes. “We all know that chronic sleep problems have been associated with a wide range of serious health consequences, and people who suffer from lack of sleep are less productive and more likely to suffer an injury or accident. Everyone can benefit from better sleep, and this treatment has been designed to instill peace and tranquility for a restful night.”
The Sleep Ritual consists of a Deep Relax Aromatherapy Massage with soothing vetiver, sandalwood and chamomile oils. Aromatherapy-style massage techniques help to promote the flow of energy throughout the body, while Swedish massage, particularly effleurage and other slow stroking movements, provide a sedating effect. Larimar, a four-star spa hotel sitting atop a small hill in the southern Austrian town of Stegerbach, has been very popular since it started operation more than one year ago.
The hotel does not owe its success to luxury, neither comfort, nor competitive prices, for it can hardly compete with nearby rival five-star hotels, villa spa hotels or the cheaper public spahotels in these regards.
Yet, Larimar has managed to achieve almost daily full booking since September. Its secret, said manager Johann Haberl, lies in introducing traditional Chinese medical therapy to its services.
The hotel invited two kungfu (an ancient Chinese fighting art) masters from China to teach the guests Qigong (a system of deep breathing exercises) and Taiji boxing and perform traditional Chinese medical massage. Continue Reading

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo is now offering a new proprietary half-day wellness programme titled ‘Oriental Wisdom’ which is available to hotel guests and day visitors alike. Bringing together an array of distinctive Asian treatments, the programme reflects Mandarin Oriental’s spa philosophy of merging ancient life-enhancing traditions and techniques from many cultures into potent therapies for optimal wellness in today’s busy world. Guests will also receive guidance for continuing some of the practices at home and incorporating them into daily life.
The four-hour, half-day wellness programme begins with a Personal Wellness Consultation to determine individual needs, and combines breathing techniques and meditation to enhance overall well-being by restoring equilibrium, detoxifying and balancing the body’s natural ‘chi’ or energy flow. After a Tibetan gong is struck to purify the space, a Welcome Ritual ensues whereby guests select one of four moonlight-cleansed power stones (amethyst, crystal, tiger’s eye and rose quartz) while also experiencing a soothing foot bath to balance and re-energise.
This is followed by the Breathing Ritual — using breathing techniques and the power of aroma to assist in tuning out the external world and reconnecting with the inner self, as well as preparing the body for the subsequent exercises and treatment. Continue Reading
